Life Changing Experience - " The moment I asked for my first job at a lawyer's office. I was entirely unqualified and knew nothing about the legal field but the timing seemed right and it never hurts to just ask. From there I launched a winding and twisting career path that will hopefully end with a Juris Doctorate."
Lessons Learned - There was a time when I was taken off of a project at one of my internships and, although it was a hard lesson to learn emotionally and financially, I'm glad I learned it when I did. This is when I came to truly understand the importance of adding value to your employer. This was a hard lesson for me to learn but I realized early that adding value isn't just some abstract term thrown around by executive management in the board room. Even as an intern, contributing to your company and working well as a team are great lessons to learn early on.
The former Oklahoma State basketball coach Eddie Sutton used to say, "The ball is in the hands of the best player on the court for 3 minutes, maybe. That is why I train my teams to play the other 37 minutes." I took that to heart and use that in the workplace day in and day out. I focus on the small tasks at hand and focus on becoming more and more consistent rather than going for the elusive slam dunk of a great presentation or one big cost cutting measure.
