Interning with The Health Policy Department in Washington DC

The Health Policy Department of Families USA:

The Health Policy Department provides analytical support for all of Families USA’s federal and state health care advocacy work. The department works along with the media, government affairs, as well as publications/web departments to develop written products for various audiences while trying to meet current advocacy needs. Health Policy Department interns are treated just like regular employees and are encouraged to participate in all meetings and discussions.

Type of Work:

  • Interns participate in primary and secondary research on a range of topics including health care access and affordability. This research includes information on Medicaid CHIP, Medicare, Rx Drugs, the private insurance market and the various state and federal approaches to ways on expanding coverage to those who are uninsured.
  • Interns will conduct surveys of state agencies and advocates.
  • Interns collect data for health policy media reports.
  • Interns prepare drafts of short and long format materials that are relevant to current health policy debates.
  • Interns work collaboratively with the Health Policy Department staff to take a written product from start to finish and often are mentioned as co-authors of written pieces.
  • Qualifications:

    • All applicants must possess strong research, writing, and computer skills.
    • Candidates with a knowledge of heath care policy is considered a plus.
    • Candidates must possess a commitment to helping people with low-income.

    Benefits:

    All internships are paid. Interns are considered part of the staff of Families USA and are expected to attend weekly staff meetings as well as internal team meetings for the purpose of discussing advocacy strategy and new initiatives being considered to ensure health care access to all U. S. residents. All interns are encouraged to take part in the active political community in DC. These activities include attending hearings on Capitol Hill, press conferences at the National Press Club, and policy forums at other major organizations and think tanks in the area.
    Brown bag discussions of advocacy work and political issues are also held and interns are expected to attend these discussions.
