Conoco Inc. was founded by Isaac E. Blake as the Continental Oil and Transportation Company in 1875. The original company provided affordable coal, oil, & kerosene to the people of Ogden, Utah. The company was acquired by Marland Oil and moved to Oklahoma, but kept the Continental name. Although the company ran into difficulties during the Great Depression it survived and later prospered as a supplier for the U.S. Government during World War II.
Phillips Petroleum Company was founded some thirty years later, in 1917 by the Phillips brothers, Frank and L.E., in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Unbelievably, the brothers’ first 81 wells all hit oil without a dry hole, which is virtually unheard of. It was a great jumpstart to the future success of the company. Phillips 66 was the best-known brand of Phillips Petroleum, named for the historic US Highway known as Route 66. Phillips also became the first company to develop propane for home cooking and heating, invented a process to make high-octane gasoline, and built the first long-distance pipeline.
ConocoPhillips was created on August 30, 2002, through the merger of Conoco and Phillips Petroleum to form one of the world’s largest oil companies. In 2006, Burlington Resources joined ConocoPhillips. The combined companies are now a Fortune 500 corporation and the world's largest independent exploration & production company. ConocoPhillips operates based on the core principles of Safety, People, Integrity, Responsibility, Innovation and Teamwork, which they call their SPIRIT Values.
