The North Carolina State Government Internship Program

The North Carolina State Government Internship Program is celebrating its 40th year. The program offers opportunities in a variety of government agencies across the state for undergraduate, graduate and students currently attending law school. This internship program creates a bridge between academic life and the real world. The internship program was designed to teach students about career options and the reality of working in public service.

Internship Description:

Students work full-time (40 hours per week) for a 10-week period over the course of the summer.


Benefits:

Student interns are paid $8.25 per hour. Students get first-hand exposure to working in state government.

Qualifications:

All applicants must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • Students must be a permanent resident of North Carolina.
  • Students must be currently enrolled at a college/university.
  • Students must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Completed high school and subsequently at least the sophomore year of college (or the first year of community college) at the time the internship begins in May,
  • Students must not have participated in the State Government Internship Program or an N.C. General Assembly paid internship in the past.

All applicants can download a 2010 N.C. State Government Internship Program booklet and application form online (select Internship Program, Information for Students). A full listing of available internship positions and application instructions can be accessed online. The booklet fully outlines eligibility requirements, the application process, application materials, the selection process, important dates, personnel and payroll policies, housing and transportation, etc.
