ESPN Should Be Applauded
Hooray for ESPN and their decision to fire Steve Phillips over his recent affair with his production assistan and former intern. More organizations should follow ESPN's example by exemplifying a morality that educators, parents, and students should expect from the entertainment, sports, political, and business organizations who offer internships and jobs to college students in order to supposedly help them gain the relevant experience they need to obtain future employment in today's job market.
A few weeks ago I mentioned the irresponsible use of power used by David Letterman and that sexual harassment of our young people should not be tolerated. Anyone with a high profile, celebrity status yielding power over individuals who are inexperienced and may possess a feeling of insecurity, should not be able to get away with such behavior.
Although older more experienced workers in the workplace may know what they're getting into and are truly consensual adults, young interns are unknowing and may interpret special interest by their superior as something very real and lasting in terms of a relationship. I applaud ESPN's decision and hope other organizations follow suit and have the courage to behave responsibly.
