Summer Job Search

Friday February 22, 2008
Although the snow is coming down and we are expected to get 3 to 6 more inches, my topic today is on looking for a summer job. Now is a great time to begin thinking about what you want to do for the summer and even begin to contact employers prior to spring break and asking about the possibility of scheduling an appointment to meet with them while you are home. Many students know that they need to make some serious money during the summer so they may decide to work as a server at a local favorite restaurant where tips might provide them with an excellent hourly wage. Students have also made excellent money working in business organizations or even acting as an instructor at a sailing school or local country club. Other students may decide to work at a local movie theater, museum, children's camp, or retail store to get enough money to help pay for books and extra spending money for fall and spring semester.

There are many excellent opportunities for college students during the summer and many organizations have come to depend on summer help increase staffing during a time when regular employees like to take some time off for traveling and vacations. You may choose to do an internship to gain some valuable experience in your field of interest; but if you need to make money and you can’t find a paid internship, you may decide to work at a summer job or perhaps do both a job and an internship. Alison Doyle, About.com’s Job Search Guide, offer some great resources for finding a summer job.
