Tips for Writing a Resume

Resume Do’s

  • Gather and all information relevant to position
  • Omit First Person Pronouns (I, me, my)
  • Omit unnecessary articles (a, an, the)
  • Use phrases with action verbs
  • Eliminate all errors
  • Plan an attractive layout
  • Make it look clean, neat, and orderly
  • Use bolding, italics, or underlines to emphasize
  • Focus on accomplishments
  • Edit, re-edit, get feedback, edit some more
  • Use professional resume paper (white, ecru, gray)
  • Use the space on the page wisely!

Resume Don’ts

  • Be too wordy
  • Include anything negative
  • Mix formats by being inconsistent with bold, italics, abbreviations, etc.
  • Let someone else prepare your resume
  • Let any errors through
  • Use inferior paper or printers
  • Use pastel paper, flower designs, photos
