There are a wide variety of people who work in the museum field and their education and training may be unique but usually constitues a well-rounded liberal arts education with a certain degree of specialization. Many of the jobs that exist in the museum field require a broad range of transferable skills. An understanding of the nonprofit world is also helpful when planning a career in the field of museums.
Internship Opportunities:
The Studio Museum in Harlem is seeking college, recent graduates and graduate level candidates in the following areas: Curatorial, Education and Public Programs, Public Relations and Publications, Director’s Office, Development and Finance. Students studying studio art and/or art history can further develop their skills and understanding by completing one or more internships in the field.
The Studio Museum inHarlem offers paid full and part-time 10 week internships during both summer and the academic year.
Opportunities Available:
The Studio Museum in Harlem offers internship opportunities for students interested in curatorial, director’s office, and education and public programs.
Curatorial – Opportunities available for college freshman, sophomores, junior, seniors and graduate students who have majored/minored in Art History, Visual Culture or a related field. This position requires excellent writing and research skills, and knowledge of the contemporary art world. Experience in Adobe Photoshop is also required.
Curatorial – Project Assistant – this position is responsible for researching image reproduction rights, communicating with photography agencies and individuals to secure digita files of images, and organizing internal dababes of relevant images. Excellen t communication and research skills are required and knowledge of twentieth-century photography a plus.
Director’s Office Internships – Interns work closely with Assistant to the Director of Chief Curator. Position is open to college juniors, seniors and graduate students who are interested in careers in Art/Art History, Museum Studies, or Arts Administration.
Education and Public Programs Internship – Interns work with staff on research and development of adult, youth, and community programs for upcoming exhibitions.
Benefits: $1600 stipend. Interns also engage in a series of workshops, meetings, offsite visits and public programs.
