The Gilbert V. Hemsley, Jr. Internship In Lighting
Lighting Design Internship

By Penny Loretto, About.com

New Bachelor and Master level graduates in Fine Arts with an interest in pursuing a career in Lighting design are encouraged to apply for the The Gilbert V. Hemsley, Jr. Internship In Lighting in New York City. These internships are nine months long and open to new graduates (not current students) only.

A number of well known professionals currently working in lighting design began their careers by completing The Hemsley Internship Program. The selected intern will be introduced to all aspects of lighting design and will have an opportunity to make valuable contacts throughout the course of the internship. The skills learned from the experience can be applied to a broad range of careers when just starting out in the field. The selected intern will have an opportunity to work with lighting designers from the Lincoln Center Festival, the New York City Opera, and the New York City Ballet.

To apply candidates must submit a resume, one-page statement of personal goals and the anticipated benefits of completing such an internship plus three letters of recommendation. A panel will review all candidates and select six individuals to interview based on interests and experience, the applicant’s submitted resume and essay, and the three recommendation letters submitted on behalf of each candidate. The top six candidates will all interview in April and one intern will then be selected from the group.

Internships will begin in June 2009 and run until the end of February in 2010. Interns may get an opportunity to tour and attend media events throughout the course of the internship. A monthly stipend of $1750 along with travel expenses will be paid to all interns.

Interested candidates must submit the required materials no later than February 15 to:
