About The National Institutes of Health:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is comprised of 27 different components called Institutes and Centers. Each institute or center participates in its own research and all but three of these components receive funding directly from Congress.

MISSION Statement:

“NIH is the steward of medical and behavioral research for the Nation. Its mission is science in pursuit of fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.”

Summer Internship Program (SIP):

Summer internships in biomedical research are available for high school, college, graduate, medical, and dental students through the National Institutes of Health. These students get the awesome opportunity to work alongside with some of the most leading scientists in the world. The institutes are totally devoted to doing biomedical research in the more than 1200 laboratories that are located on the main campus in Bethesda, MD and the adjunct campuses located in the south and mid-west.

Qualifications:

Students must be sixteen years of age or older and must be enrolled at least half-time in high school or college. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to participate in the program.

Benefits:

Stipends are awarded to participating students. The program runs for eight weeks and usually begins around May or June.

The Office of Intramural Training & Education offers students a wide range of educational programming and activities throughout the course of their internship. Additional opportunities such as the Science in the Cinema series as well as a series of lectures during lunch whereby students can listen to NIH investigators and informal talks on training for research careers.

Locations:

All internships take place in one of the following locations: Bethesda, MD; Raleigh/Durham, NC; Frederick, MD; Baltimore, MD; Hamilton, MT; Phoenix, AZ; and Detroit, MI.

To Apply:

All candidates for the NIH's Summer Internship Program must apply online. Applications are available online between the middle of November until March 1st.

To apply, students must submit:

  1. A curriculum vitae or resume
  2. A list of coursework and grades
  3. A cover letter describing their research interests and career goals
  4. The names and contact information of two references

Scientists in the Institutes and Centers will make all selections and candidates will be informed of their selection by the hiring institute.
