Summer Internship Program:
The Virginian-Pilot Summer Internship Program is a highly competitive program located “on the beach” and open to junior and senior college students. Sophomore and graduate students (still enrolled in college December 2008) may also be considered based on openings available. Interested candidates must have experience working on a college newspaper and additional newspaper and multimedia experience are highly preferred.
Students will get experience meeting and speaking with editors along with other professionals working at the magazine. This is an excellent opportunity to learn the ropes of working at a real magazine and gaining that relevant work experience that newspapers and magazines require when hiring new candidates. Networking with professionals will also provide a heads up on what employers look for in their new recruits.
Benefits:
The Virginian-Pilot Summer internship program pays $600 per week and is 12 weeks long. The internship at the sports copy desk lasts for six months.
Application Process:
- Send a resume and cover letter that includes the names of at least 3 references.
- Reporters, copy editors and designers must submit a print portfolio (including 8 – 10 published work samples that illustrates your best writing, page layout, or headline writing).
- Photographers and graphic artists must submit a print portfolio (including a minimum of 20 print samples of published photographs or illustrations).
- CD or links can be included in the application packet but be sure to send examples of published work as it appeared in print.
