Opportunities for Students & Job Seekers in Florida

Indications that the Job Market is Improving

If recent career fairs held at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL, or the BB&T Center in Sunrise, FL, are any indication of the current job market in sunny Florida, it appears that things seem to be moving in a positive direction for job seekers and college students seeking to find internships.

Marcia Heroux Pounds, staff writer for the SunSentinel for over 25 years and author of "I Found a Job", has been writing about business and career issues for over two decades and offers some sage advice, gathered from successful job seekers, for those currently seeking a job in today’s competitive job market. During the recession Florida’s unemployment rate was among some of the highest in the nation and this relatively new shift in seeing those numbers decline is very good news for those currently living or possibly moving to the area.

The recent shift in hiring in both Southern Florida and the nation can be seen as a ray of light at the end of a long dark tunnel. For job and internship seekers it means getting your resume out there to employers is crucial in order to be able to get a foot in the door prior to other individuals who are applying for similar positions. A proactive approach is imperative in getting the right job or internship. This means researching and applying for all jobs and internships you find in your field that are of interest to you. It also means following up your application efforts with a phone call or email to personally express your interest. Thank you notes are also a good way to highlight your interest, knowledge, and skills and should be sent to everyone who has taken the time to do phone or in-person interviews with you or who have offered any suggestions or advice in your current internship/job search.

What employers are saying:

Dan Madden, general manager of distribution company Eastern Metal Supply in Lake Worth, said there are more opportunities for new graduates at South Florida companies. "Employers are starting to plug holes unfilled for the last five years," said Madden, who has been working with local universities to recruit science and technology students. "I see that starting to heat up."

3Cinteractive, a Boca Raton technology firm, was looking to fill slots for their summer internship program along with other national and regional accounting firms attending the event. According to Megan Piedt, human resources staffer at 3Cinteractive, last year the company hired on 3 of its summer interns and this year the company plans on recruiting up to eight interns for their program.
