Cross-Cultural Solutions
The Value of Volunteering Abroad

By Penny Loretto, About.com

Cross-Cultural Solutions started in 1995 and has been operating international volunteer programs for over 10 years. They operate in over 12 countries and are considered an expert in their field of volunteering overseas by the United Nations, CARE, and the Brookings Institute. CCS works to create quality, life changing experiences for students and works hard to teach them about cultural differences and how to thrive in a global economy.

One of CCS’s goals is to help students learn about and appreciate the differences and similarities between people. Their programs include volunteers from a variety of backgrounds and they strive to develop a volunteer group that is diverse in abilities and who come from a variety of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds with equal opportunities offered to individuals regardless of nationality, sexual orientation, age, or religious beliefs.

Like most programs, the cost to participate in Cross Cultural Solutions must be evaluated as to the benefits it affords students. Students should take their needs and interests into consideration when deciding upon any program. Cross-Cultural Solutions offers Volunteer Abroad, Intern Abroad, and one week Insight Abroad experiences.

Be sure to check out CCS's website for total costs and minimum stay requirements. Program fees take care of housing and all of the students' basic needs and covers just about everything except the costs associated with visas and necessary immunizations, airfare to and from countries, personal internet use and/or phone calls, and laundry.
