Interview with Logan - Next Step Connections Intern

About Logan:

Logan is from Seattle, Washington and is currently a sophomore at The Colorado College. Logan is interested in Computer Science, Military History, Artificial Intelligence, and Biomechanical Engineering. Logan is part of the financial and general council of the student government on campus and in charge of a new project called Hertz Connect. Ideally Logan would like to join the Navy as an officer in the intelligence branch and perhaps eventually transfer to a civilian intelligence office (CIA, FBI, DHS, etc.). He's also thought about the possibility of going to business school to get an MBA and become a consultant.

What is your college major/minor and have you completed any internships:

My major is computer science and economics. I’ve previously interned at a few small technology companies the last two years. Logan also speaks a little in six foreign languages; Japanese, French, German, Italian, Chinese, and Russian.

How did you hear about Next Step Connections:

I googled “summer internship in China” and went through the results.

Was it difficult obtaining an internship through Next Step Connections:

It was not hard at all to get an internship with Next Step Connections. Within a week or so of me filling out a simple interest form for Next Step, they had set up 2 phone interviews with companies in my designated field of interest.

Where did you intern and what kind of internship did you complete:

I interned at Sherpa’s delivery company. I worked as part of the quality control department and then later as part of the menu department. For both I would create English documents for the company, proofread translations, create format guides for our menus, make sure our call center staff were handling complaints well, etc.

Did you have a choice of internships to choose from:

Yes, it was between Sherpa’s and some sort of commodities trading company.

How do you feel your internship helped prepare you for the real world:

I had only previously worked for very small companies, max of 10 people so this was a great opportunity to learn how things work in companies with departments and managers.

Did the internship meet your personal and professional expectations:

Absolutely, it was exactly what I was looking for in terms of gaining experience in an environment I was not accustomed to.

Would you recommend Next Step Connections to a friend:

Absolutely, in fact I think they’d have a better time than I did. I’m not a fan of networking or mixers, and Next Step Connections would often (once or twice every couple weeks) be organizing events like these so I wouldn’t attend. My friends are much more social than I am and so would probably get even more out of it than I did.
