About Kampus Asia:

Kampus Asia offers internships and housing in Shanghai for students from around the world. They work with a variety of organizations within the country that offers quality and often paid opportunities to students. Interview with Yohann Cantin, previous General Manager of Kampus Asia.

Please tell us a little bit about Kampus Asia and how it originated:

In 2005, four people of different nationalities (French, Swiss, British, and Chinese) launched a housing service for students in Shanghai and Beijing, focusing on helping students to find affordable apartments. To ensure a good stay for their young guests the company, at that time named “Flat Shanghai”, was renovated and provided fully furnished apartments for several years. After 4 years of experience in renting apartments and rooms to about 300 students, they have decided to extend their services and provide a complete internship program. A new company is born: Kampus Asia.

What sets Kampus Asia apart from similar internship programs:

Early 2009 Kampus Asia launched a new friendly user website. The first thing you notice on the website is direct access to the current offers online. This is quite new and advantageous for students looking for internship in China; it is a priority to keep the online offers updated, no obsolete information.

Students register for free: They can select several internships, choose the starting date and length of stay, decide on the type of accommodation … The new version of the website makes it more efficient for both the student and Kampus.

A student starts using Kampus Asia network as soon as he / she is registered. Since all information is filled out online by the student, Kampus focuses on what is important: getting the right internship for the participant. As soon as a resume is posted online, a Kampus coordinator will review it and send it to the companies that may be interested. Even if the candidate hasn’t completed the application yet, Kampus may contact a candidate directly if a company is willing to recruit him/her.

What types of internships are available through Kampus Asia:

Basically a participant can choose within any field he/she wants. The most popular internships are within marketing & public relations, banking & finance, and media & journalism. Kampus Asia is partnered with the biggest events company in Shanghai and offers positions in all kinds of fields for Shanghai Expo 2010.

About 80 % of Kampus Asia internships are paid, a company will usually pay between 200 USD and 900 USD a month.

What are the eligibility requirements for students to participate in a Kampus As:

  • Fluent in English
  • 18 years of age
  • Speaking Mandarin is not compulsory
  • Motivated and a good team player
  • Ability to work with different nationalities

How easy is it for a student to get accepted for an internship with Kampus Asia:

The most important criteria to get an internship with Kampus Asia is high motivation and showing a real interest in the program (by answering emails in 24h, filling out your account online, providing a cover letter, etc.). The layout of the resume and its contents is crucial in giving a good first impression to employers. The success and time on placing a student also depend on how much a student can accept as a salary or allowance. It may be a very good internship with a little allowance; it all depends on what the student is ready to accept.

Is it possible for 2 students to sign up together and get an internship placemen:

Absolutely. Students, friends… can get an internship in the same city and live in the same apartment.

Does Kampus Asia curtail any of these costs with stipends, scholarships or award:

With many internship programs such as Kampus Asia there are costs involved for student participants. Kampus Asia almost always offers paid internships and selects companies willing to pay their interns as a top priority. Kampus Asia’s position on the market is to offer a cheaper rate than most of their competitors without offering any stipends or scholarships.
