Assignment:
Interns accepted into the Magazine Publishers of America Summer Internship Program may be expected to complete a number of assignments, such as: editing magazines, handling reader mail, evaluating unsolicited manuscripts, researching articles, checking facts, proofreading, copy editing, interviewing, covering press conferences, and attending editorial meetings. Additional reporting and writing opportunities (including bylines) may be included for several of the magazines.
Orientation & Work Assignments:
Each intern will complete a two-and-a-half day orientation in New York City with an opportunity to meet other interns and alumni of the program. Editors and magazine executives will discuss magazine editing and publishing while alumni will discuss magazine jobs and living in the city. Weekly luncheons also keep interns informed and provide an opportunity to meet various editors and magazine professionals.
Students will be assigned to magazines based on their skills and the preferences of magazine editors. Although students may not be able to select their work assignment they will receive information from the magazine’s editor prior to starting the internship.
Qualifications:
Interns are selected on their completed application and their interest in journalism and magazine work. Applicants must complete their junior year by June 2009 and in the process of beginning their senior year in college by the end of the summer. Journalism majors with previous experience working on a college newspaper, magazine, or yearbook are preferred and previous internships in the field are highly recommended. Liberal arts majors must have held a senior position on a campus newspaper, magazine, or yearbook and must have completed a journalism internships or summer job.
Salary & Benefits:
Students will receive $350 per week prior to deductions. No additional money is provided for travel, housing, food, or personal expenses. ASME will assist students with dormitory arrangements in New York City and Washington D.C. Many students in New York stay in NYU residence halls. At the end of the internships, students will be asked to submit a written report on their experience and will be asked if they have any suggestions for the program.
