Summer Research Opportunities for Students in the Social Sciences

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research(ICPSR), the world’s largest archive of digital social science data, seeks college students with a strong interest in social science research for its summer undergraduate internship program held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Students will have an opportunity to work in a UNIX environment and gain experience using statistical programs to check data for content and accuracy. The program gives students the opportunity to prepare data for permanent archiving and distribution for secondary analysis; preserve respondent anonymity; and more.

1. Description

An experienced Research Associate will supervise all interns and there may be some additional social and work-related functions involving other ICPSR staff and interns coming from other units of the Institute for Social Research (ISR) and summer programs. Interns will participate in classes and will be required to attend a weekly Lunch and Lecture series which will expose them to various aspects and departments of ICPSR and the ISR.

2. Qualifications

  • Social science majors (history, psychology, sociology, economics, political science, public policy, anthropology, geography, criminal justice, plus additional areas of studies) who have successfully completed their sophomore year.

  • Possess strong analytical, research, and verbal and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of statistical software packages (i.e., SPSS, SAS, Stata).

  • Leadership skills and ability to prioritize work and multitask.

  • Work well independently and as part of a team.

  • Authorized to work in the United States.

3. Semester

The duration of the 10-week internship program goes from June 8 to August 14, 2009.

4. Compensation

Students will be paid a $3,000 stipend, room & board in university housing, and coverage of the cost of fees, texts, and materials for coursework in the ICPSR Summer Program.
