Before accepting an unpaid internship, take a little time to see if there are paid internships in your field as well. Since many students need to work and make money, the only way they could accept an unpaid internship is by doing it along with a paid summer job.
Although I'm not opposed to doing an unpaid internship when it makes sense and it's the only way to get valuable experience in a particular career field, I'm also aware that there are many students who can't even consider doing an internship that doesn't involve some type of financial compensation.
Also, be sure to check with your college to see if they offer funding for summer internships. Many college's today seek donations from alumni, parents, and staff to assist students by funding a summer internship.
