The New York State Assembly each year offers a SESSION INTERNSHIP for college students. These internships give college students an opportunity to participate in state government and the legislative process. Up to 150 college students are accepted into the program each year.
Eligibility:
Students must be either a junior or senior and fully matriculated in a college degree program. Upper level matriculated students in an associates program are also encouraged to apply. Students can be studying in any major and must demonstrate academic ability and be recommended by their college liaison.
Requirements:
Students will spend a minimum of 30 hours, exclusive of academic course requirements, at the state capital each week. Students will be placed in January by the Assembly Intern Committee based on their experience, abilities, and interests.
Benefits:
Undergraduate students will receive a $4,140 stipend (including book allowance) for the January 4, 2010 to May 12, 2010 session along with a full semesters credit. Graduate Scholars will receive a $11,500 scholarship. Additional scholarships and waivers may be available for some students. Interns will complete an orientation and will be enrolled in a course that is taught by the Intern Committee faculty. Students are also required to attend issue Policy Forums each week and are assigned research and administrative responsibilities in an Assembly office.
The internship is generally completed for credit and is a comprehensive program that recommends that participating students should not be enrolled in more than 3 credit hours in addition to the SESSION INTERNSHIP.
