Networking

Since networking is the #1 job search strategy, it is a good idea to develop a plan early to contact family, friends, previous teachers, coworkers and employers, college alumni, as well as any casual acquaintances that you come in contact with. Your plan can begin by contacting people you know well. By giving them an update on what you’re doing and what your plans are for the future, you will be providing them with the information they need to assist you in your search for an internship or a job.

Your goal is to touch base with these people and enlist their help. You are not contacting them for the purpose of getting an internship or job, but mainly to establish or re-establish your professional connections. You might ask them if you can send a copy of your resume to them to look over and perhaps offer some advice. Be sure to immediately forward your resume with a friendly note attached after you've enlisted their help. If you don’t hear back from them, call them and ask if they have any suggestions for your resume and thank them for their time and consideration and any help they have offered.
