Deciding on an Internship

Wednesday March 12, 2008
I have been speaking with a number of students who are unsure about exactly what they want to do for summer. They know they want to do an internship but they are just not sure what kind of internship they want to do. Indecision can feel frustrating and uncomfortable but making a decision can often make you feel better. The important thing to remember is that internships are an opportunity for you to try new things. Even if you find that the internship is not what you expected, it provides you with additional information on a specific career that will help you to make a more informed career decision in the future.

So, if you are not sure what you want to do for the summer; my suggestion is to do some research on career options and opportunities and then find an internship that provides a way to get experience in one of those areas. The experience you get may end up being something you love or you may learn that you need to move on and find something else. Either way you are gaining information on careers and moving closer to finding a career path that will be the right decision for you.
