Summer Internships for Credit

Thursday February 21, 2008
If you're thinking of doing an internship for credit for the summer, you may want to think again. Check with your college to find out how much you will need to pay to do an internship for credit for the summer. Some colleges require a minimum of three credits while others offer one and two credit internships and some offer transcript notations. Internship credit is usually included in the regular tuition of a college curriculum, but summer internships may require an additional per credit hour fee paid to the college for the summer semester.

The experience is the most important part of doing an internship and internships for credit are not considered more credible than not-for-credit internships. The reason you may elect to do an internship for credit is if you need to get those additional credits during the summer to catch up or to graduate. When including an internship on a resume, you do not have to indicate if the internship was for credit or even if it was a paid or unpaid internship. It is the experience and the skills gained that are important and what will make a difference on your resume. It is for this reason that many students elect to do internships for credit during the fall and spring semesters and not-for-credit internships during the summer.
